A Signature Scent: How to Build the Smell People Remember You By
A signature scent is not a bottle but a structure: base, heart and top. Once you understand the pyramid you no longer need half an hour of sniffing in a shop and a headache to show for it.

A perfume has three layers, and each opens at a different time.
The pyramid
Top (0–20 minutes). Citrus, mint, green notes. The most volatile part. This is usually all you smell in a shop — which is why purchases go wrong.
Heart (20 minutes – 3 hours). Rose, jasmine, iris, spice. The real character of the scent lives here.
Base (3 hours onward). Wood, musk, amber, vanilla, vetiver. What remains on the skin. People remember you by this layer.
Which means a signature scent should be chosen by its base, not by its top.
Four families, four characters
- Floral — rose, jasmine, lily. Classic, familiar, broad.
- Oriental (amber) — vanilla, amber, spice. Warm, dense, evening.
- Woody — sandalwood, cedar, vetiver. Quiet, serious, genderless.
- Fresh — citrus, aquatic, green. Daytime, work, summer.
A signature scent usually comes from inside one family. Wood and amber behave better in autumn and winter; floral and fresh in spring and summer.
How to test in a shop
- Try no more than three scents at once.
The best perfume is not the one noticed before you enter a room, but the one noticed after you leave it.
Layering
The simplest way to make a scent your own is to build it in two layers:
- A neutral base: a simple musk or sandalwood fragrance.
- Above it: a second scent with character (iris, rose, tobacco).
The result is never identical on two people, because the proportion is yours.
Concentration
- Eau de Cologne — 2–5%, about 2 hours.
- Eau de Toilette — 5–15%, 3–4 hours.
- Eau de Parfum — 15–20%, 5–8 hours.
- Parfum (extrait) — 20–30%, all day.
EDP works better in autumn, EDT in summer. And one rule: never rub perfume in — press it on. Rubbing breaks the top notes.
